General Studies Department

The department was established in July 2004 under the National Institute of Transport (NIT) Act No.24 of 1982, section 4(f), which sets the provision for the Institute to establish its departments within the Institute for the organization and administration of its work and activities. Other existing academic department include Automobile Engineering, Transport Management, Road Safety, ICT/Learning Resources, Centre for Continuing Education, Academic Administration, Research, Consultancy and Publications and Library.

Objectives
•  To enhance lifelong learning through provision of key skills;
•  To enhance entrepreneurial skills
•  To provide consultancy services
•  To give prominence to the subjects, which were formally marginalized under the core Departments
•  Increase efficiency among tutors of General Studies by organising them into a single confined department

Department Organisation Structure

Head of Department
The Head of General Studies Department is responsible to the Director of Studies. Her/His appoint follows the existing appointment policy as approved by the Governing Council.

Assistant Head of Department
The department has Assistant head, she/he work together with the head of the department to accomplish the objectives of the department.

Main Duties of the Department.
The Main duties of the department are:

•  To raise awareness among students and members of the staff on various political, social and economic issues by Organising and conducting presentations and different workshops wherever it is necessary.

• Provide assistance to the students and members of the staff on all matters relating to general studies.

• Editing of tutors and students document proposals and different reports.

• Further more the Department is responsible in the provision of preliminary legal advice to the staffs and Institution at large using her experts.

• Provision of the experts to deal with all subjects, which cut across all the courses.

• Department is also responsible in conducting various social and political researches which will have impacts on Transport sector.

Evaluation of student's performance in all the subjects and give solution to any Academic problem that will be observed in the process of Evaluation.

Subjects
The General Studies Department is dealing with the following subjects:

• Mathematics
• Development Studies
• Communication Skills
• Entrepreneurship
• Laws
• Quantitative Methods and Systems (QMS), and
• Statistics
• Research Methodology

These subjects are taught in all academic departments. Initially, the subjects were organised within the departments.

The subjects offered help the learners to acquire different abilities to deal with real life problems, and ever-changing demands in the world of work and life generally. Some of the key skills include:

•  Communication skills both oral and written form
•  Flexibility and ability to handle change;
•  Information technology skills
•  Learning to learn and adapt;
•  Numeracy, and basic computation skills;
•  Planning and organization skills.
•  Problem solving skills and
•  Team work and team roles skills.

•  Entrepreneurial skills

Teaching Staff
The department has qualified teaching personnel. The staff holds Masters and PhD degrees.
