The Information Communication Technology & Learning Resources (ICT & LR) Department
Was established in May 2004 under the National Institute of Transport (NIT) Act. No. 24 of 1982, section 4(f), which sets the provision for the Institute to establish its departments within the Institute for the Organization and administration of its work and activities.
Objectives
Information Technology deals with the use of computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information, for that reason therefore, the main objectives of ICT at the Institute are:
To train students and the entire community in using computers and their application.
To train both academic and administrative staff.
To prepare training materials in terms of photo copying and binding.
To manage a modern built LAN that facilitates sharing of resources among members of the Institute and the entire community.
To manage internet facilities that enables the NIT community to access information and literature from elsewhere in the world.
To provide internet services to customers other than the NIT Community.

Long Course
Diploma in Information Technology (DIT)
Short courses
A department also runs different types of computer short courses like PC Technician, Web site Design and Development, Special Computer Training for Visually Impaired People and Knowledgeable End Users Creation. Introduction to Computers, Word processing using windows 2003, Spread sheet using MS Excel 2003, Database Management using MS Access etc.
Learning Resources (LR) section
The department of ICT manages the Learning Resources section.
This section deals with preparation of learning materials in terms of photocopying and binding. The LR section has two heavy duty photocopiers and four spiral binding machines.
FUTURE PLAN
In the near future, the department is planning to run a one year certificate course i.e. CERTIFICATE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (CIT). This course will save as a bridge for those who doesn't have the qualification to undergo a diploma course.
