Welcome Note from CoEATO

The National Institute of Transport (NIT) is implementing the World Bank’s East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP) which aims at strengthening Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Institutions by establishing Regional Flagship TVET Institutions (RFTIs) focusing in either ICT, Transport, Manufacturing, Agro-processing or Renewable Energy. EASTRIP is implemented in three countries; Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia, with a total of 16 RFTIs selected among the three countries. NIT is one among the four Tanzanian RFTIs, focusing on air transport and transport operations in general by establishing a Center of Excellence in Aviation and Transport Operations (CoEATO). CoEATO was established with the aim to address the challenges resulting from expanding economic activity in agribusiness, energy and tourism in East Africa. This expansion includes: construction of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in Tanzania and Kenya, reviving the Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) and expanding road networks and harbors to support the economic development initiatives. Also, tourism depends on aviation to bring tourists and plays a dominant role in tourists’ inter-regional movements. This requires an adequate number of highly skilled personnel in aviation and transport operations who will be trained and produced by NIT’s Center of Excellence in Aviation and Transport Operations.

Objectives of CoEATO

  • To have efficient and effective governance for quality management system;
  • Facilitate establishment of collaborations with industry and partner TVET institutions;
  • Provide well trained graduates who are ready for the local and regional market;
  • Increase the number and update/upgrade skills of aviation and transport logistics professionals in the industry;

CoEATO Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC)

To effectively meet CoEATO objectives, The Centre of Excellence in Aviation and Transport Operations has established an Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC) composed of competent, diverse and qualified members capable of exercising goals and independent judgment to provide strategic and technical direction to the operations of the Centre, exercise control and remain accountable to NIT Governing Council. The IAC is expected to advise the Head of CoEATO on technological, competitive, economic and human resource trends which may affect the implementation of the Center’s operational activities. The IAC is composed of 12 members, with half of the committee affiliated with the private sector so as to allow private sector needs and recommendations to be accommodated in the development of niche programs facilitated by CoEATO.
